We are proud to provide pro bono assistance to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, as well as individual artists who cannot typically afford the legal services needed to survive and grow. This investment helps our communities thrive and encourages our neighbors to share their stories and preserve their rich histories. Our work includes, but is not limited to, venue contracting, international touring logistics and finance, property acquisition, advising on technology questions, and reviewing and drafting IT service agreements. We have assisted many nonprofits with their day-to-day operations, from entity formation, drafting and reviewing contracts, to advising on corporate governance. In supporting the visions of artistic innovators, we hope to connect people from all backgrounds.
Our work this past year included drafting policies and guidance; advising on intellectual property licensing, investments/asset management, corporate governance, tax, employment, grant agreements, fiscal sponsorship agreements, and donation agreements; and providing immigration counseling.
Sidley was included among the class of 2025 IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award recipients for our pro bono legal work in support of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s mission and long-term growth. As recognized in the award announcement: “The firm has provided invaluable support in areas such as corporate governance, including revising bylaws and educating directors on fiduciary duties; transitioning the IBMA to 501c3 nonprofit status, enabling tax-deductible donations; advising on contracts and agreements; assisting with travel visa processes for international bands; and protecting IBMA’s intellectual property. Over the last decade, Sidley Austin has donated over $1.5 million in legal services, ensuring the IBMA’s stability and growth, especially during challenging times like the pandemic.” Past recipients of the IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award include The Grand Ole Opry, The Gibson Company, The Martha White Flour Company, The Martin Guitar Company and bluegrass legends Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs.
The award was presented at the Awards Luncheon on September 18 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was acknowledged that evening at the IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards, all a part of the annual IBMA World of Bluegrass® celebration. The IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards honor outstanding achievement across musical, industry, and philanthropic categories. The cross-office Sidley team that has represented the IBMA on a variety of matters comprises lawyers from many of the firm’s practice areas, including: Corporate Governance, Privacy and Cybersecurity, Global Arbitration, Trade and Advocacy, Technology and Life Sciences Transactions, Restructuring, Labor, Employment and Immigration, Commercial Litigation and Disputes, and Non-Profit Institutions.
